Relationship Between Subjective Chinese Speech Intelligibility and Objective Acoustics Parameter C50

The speech intelligibility in rooms is evaluated by using the room impulse responses obtained from the room acoustical simulation software ODEON. The simulated room impulse responses are first convolved with the test word lists of speech intelligibility recorded in an anechoic chamber, and are then reproduced through the earphone. Afterwards, the relationship between the subjective Chinese speech intelligibility scores and the objective acoustical parameter, namely the early-late sound energy ratio ( C50, 500 ~ 4 kHz), is revealed and validated. The results indicate that, under dichotic (binaural) listening condition, there is high correlation between the subjective Chinese speech intelligibility scores and C50 (500 ~ 4kHz), and that C50 (500 ~ 4kHz) can be used to predict the subjective Chinese speech intelligibility in halls.
