A Study on the Timbre of an Electric Guitar Sound with Distortion

The distortion of electric guitar, which is one of the most important characteristics of music, is focused on describing timbre. This paper experimentally investigates the relationship between the dissimilarity representing the difference in timbre with different distortions and the physical factors extracted from the autocorrelation function of the source signal. A factor Wφ(0) is defined by the width at 0.5 crossing of the normalized autocorrelation function, φ(0). In the experiment with simulated distortion,it is found that the factor Wφ(0) well describes the distortion. At the same time, a high correlation between the dissimilarity and the mean value of Wφ(0) was shown. Another experiment performed similarly using commercial effectors also shows the high correlation between the dissimilarity and the mean value of Wφ(0).
