Outdoor Pop Concert Sound Control: Open-Air Concert in the Heart of Hong Kong
Outdoor concerts in Hong Kong are generally permitted providing they meet certain noise standards and specified finishing times. Noise from these events are monitored or evaluated by the Environmental Protection Department. Six-time Grammy-Award-Winner, named by 2005 Time Magazine as the top 100 most influential people, Hip Hop producer-singer-songwriter Kanye West had his one and only Asian stop in Hong Kong, on November 28, 2006. It took place at a brand new outdoor venue in West Kowloon-Hong Kong Outdoor Drive-In, at the heart of the Victoria Harbour. Hennessy V. S. O. P Kanye West Touch the Sky Tour Live in Hong Kong was opened by local Hip-Hop-maniac Edison Chen, and backed by a string-orchestra. The venue is surrounded by high rise luxury residential towers over looking the beautiful harbour and stringent noise control strategy was developed. During the concert, the sound pressure level at control console located at 45m from the stage, continuously measured up to 107dB(A). Instead of using the traditional noise mitigation techniques which rely upon materials science applications of constructing sound baffles or using sound absorbing liners, novel use of light-weight materials and sand bags had successfully controlled the sound overspill.
