The Relationship Analysis between Transportation Development and Economy Growth by Cross-spectral Approach
As the identification of the development relationship between transportation industry and economic plays an important role in guiding the transportation and economic growth, this paper makes quantitative studies on the adaptation and coordination relationship of the cyclical fluctuations between the transportation and economic indicator time series, through the sample cross covariance function with windowed Fourier transform method, as well as develops the cross-spectral analysis-based development relationship model on the transportation and economic indicators. First, according to the correlation theories, the cross covariance and cross-correlated functions between the transportation and economic indicator time series are calculated. Subsequently, based on the cross covariance and cross-correlated functions, cospectrum and quadrature spectrum estimation is conducted on transportation and economic indicator time series by the Tukey-Hanning Window-based Censored Fourier Transform. Further, according to the cospectrum and quadrature spectrum calculation results, based on the relationship functions by transform from different coordinate systems, the cross-amplitude spectrum and phase spectrum estimation is implemented on the transportation and economic indicator time series. Finally, the spectrum-analysis results presented by the case studies on the whole society cargo volume and gross domestic product data from 1949 to 2003 demonstrate that the algorithm proposed in this paper is practical and effective. Through the application of cross-spectral analysis method on the relationship estimation between transportation development and the economy growth, the approach proposed in this paper could measure the transportation and economy relationship from the entire industry and economic development process, as well as eliminate the disadvantages of the traditional research methods which rely solely on certain turning points to determine the preceding or succeeding development relationship. Moreover, the approach would contribute to a more in-depth analysis on the preceding or succeeding development relationship between transportation and economic development in different countries or regions.
