Business Module Comparison between SINA and SOHU
Sina (Nasdaq: SINA) and Sohu (Nasdaq: SOHU) are the first tier web portals in China. They are now acting as the leading online media companies and value added service providers (VAS) for China and for Chinese communities worldwide. In order to be profitable and make the profitability sustainable, they have diversified their business into many other fields, such as selling online advertisements, mobile value-added services, online games, E-Commerce etc. Each company, however, has a different strategy in their business module and this makes quite a difference in the revenue constitution for each company. What are the major reasons for those different choices? What are the advantages and disadvantages of these different business modules? And how about the trends? The objective of this study is to discuss the issues related to the business modules that have been typically adopted by the portal companies in China. An in depth investigation of business module differentiation will be made through the analysis of the top two local web portals. The trends of a portal company in China will be discussed finally.
