Transformation of the Canadian Forest Industry through Innovation

Global changes are prompting the Canadian forest sector to look closely at extracting greater value along the value chain, with a specific focus on the marketplace. A renewed forest sector innovation system will focus more on new product development and market diversification but not to the exclusion of the shorter term needs of the sector. The creation of FPInnovations, an enhanced public-private R & D partnership along with the full engagement of all organizations performing R & D within Canada will allow us to augment research efforts on shorter term incremental improvements while also supporting longer term technological solutions that could transform the industry. This presentation will introduce the new FPInnovations institute and describe its mission, the role it is expected to play in renewing the forest sector innovation system and its relationship with other R & D organizations, particularly universities. It will highlight the long-term strategic objectives of the Canadian forest sector and the technology platforms required in order to develop new value streams while ensuring operational excellence in delivering new and existing research products and services, and optimally utilizing a sustainable, yet affordable, Canadian wood supply. Discussion will also be given on the important role that lingo- cellulosic fibre will play as a feedstock to fuel the emerging bioeconomy.
