Nonresidential Market Opportunities for Plywood and the Need for International Conformity Assessment

The worldwide production of softwood plywood continues to grow but relatively few new markets are being created to absorb this growth. In addition, products such as oriented strand board (OSB) are replacing plywood in traditional markets such as housing in the United States. This makes it imperative that the plywood industry creates new market opportunities to assure a viable future. One such opportunity is to expand the use of plywood in low-rise nonresidential building construction. A major effort to accomplish this is underway in the U. S. and similar activities need to be undertaken in other countries and regions such as Japan, China and Europe. In addition, since the use of plywood in nonresidential buildings is typically a highly engineered application involving human life/safety, it is essential that appropriate conformity assessment provisions be in place on an international level to assure the structural performance of the plywood. In addition, standards must also address adhesive issues to assure that the plywood will perform as intended even if it is exposed to moisture during the transportation, job site storage and installation cycle. And, verification should also include that the plywood meets applicable national indoor air quality and formaldehyde emissions standards. This paper will address possible low-rise nonresidential market opportunities for plywood. It will also address various international standards for plywood and their associated conformity assessment requirements that are needed to support this highly engineered end use market.
