Plywood/LVL Products Made from Mountain Pine Beetle (MPB)-Attacked Wood

The devastating mountain pine beetle (MPB) infestation has damaged more than 1.2 billion cubic meters of timber in Western Canada, resulting in an increased volume of larger diameter, but drier, checked and stained lodgepole pine logs entering British Columbia (B. C.) plywood/LVL mills. To increase the value recovery from this altered resource, several studies have been conducted to determine the impact of MPB wood on veneer and plywood processing, and characterize the performance of MPB plywood and LVL products in comparison with the normal whitewood mix comprising spruce, lodgepole pine and subalpine fir (SPF), To help determine the best product options from MPB veneer for highest valued engineered applications, this study characterized properties of the MPB veneer against the control SPF veneer and Douglas-fir veneer based on data collected from the mill production and further determined the performance attributes of MPB plywood and LVL in comparison with Douglas-fir counterparts. The results demonstrated that despite about 8% lower veneer recovery, the MPB veneer was about 7.0% denser and about 8.7% stronger than the control SPF veneer, which made it almost interchangeable with Douglas-fir veneer. Compared to the control SPF veneer, the MPB veneer yielded about 20% higher grade outturn from veneer stress grading for manufacturing high grade LVL or specialty plywood products. Compared to Douglas-fir plywood and LVL, MPB counterparts had similar gluebond quality and bending performance but poorer dimensional stability. However, through species mix and surface overlay, the issues such as bluestain visibility and dimensional instability can be satisfactorily resolved. As a result, the MPB wood was well suited for manufacturing high strength plywood/LVL products.
