Sustainable Wood Procurement: The Role of Forest Certification

The emergence of the Chinese forest products sector as a global leader has placed focus on the legality and sustainability of the forests from which log supplies are secured. Forest certification will play an increasingly important role in addressing these issues and providing assurance to customers and governments that the sector is based on sustainability principles. The program for the Endorsement of Forest certification (PEFC) is the largest global certification framework with over 20 national schemes endorsed. This scheme, its role in future wood supply in the China region, and efforts being made to promote its development in the Asia region are described and discussed.
