Development of Veneer Quality Measuring Device-SMOF
Quality of the veneers depends on many parameters of peeling process: thickness of the veneer, wood treatment, knife geometry, clearance angle, compression ratio, cutting speed, etc. In order to optimize these parameters with regard to the product quality, an effective device for quantitative veneer rating is necessary. The main goal of such a device is to automatically determine a set of quality parameters. Presented device-SMOF allows to evaluate such quality parameters as: thickness variations, lathe checks occurrence and their depth. In the future it will be also possible to measure state of veneer surface. Determination of all parameters takes place at once, in a simple manner and with low time consumption. SMOF is equipped with regulated feed system (DC motor, set of pulleys and belt), high speed line scan camera (36kHz) for lathe checks detecting and analyzing, and LVDT sensor for instantaneous thickness measurement. Placing a Laser Displacement Sensor (LDS) or Confocal Chromatic Light Sensor for 2D surface characterization is planned as a next step. Actual set-up allows the veneer feed rates to reach the level of 7m/min, depending of the PC capacity. SMOF is dedicated to analyze wet veneers of thickness up to 5mm, although when respecting some rules it is possible to measure dry veneers as well. At this stage the width of the veneer being examined may not exceed 40mm.
