Challenges in the Online Characterization of the Veneer Surface Topography
This paper discusses some of the challenges in the online characterization of the veneer surface and how simulation might be used to develop effective industrial surface characterization techniques. Some general characteristics of the veneer surface topography as well as the local properties of veneer are discussed. Most of the challenges facing instrument design are related to the requirement for speed and accuracy. Because of this, all superfluous information acquired during the measurement process should not be considered and thus, focused, case- specific surface measurement techniques are needed. Those tailored measurement systems can be designed individually by using a systematic instrument design process. This process includes, firstly, the measurement of representative sample surfaces and then the simulation of the whole measurement process. Simulation can also be used to evaluate existing instrument.
