Steam Trap Control by Means of Distributed Temperature Monitoring
The proper steam trap control is one of the big challenges and the key to optimize steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD). The philosophy of steam trap control by means of distributed temperature monitoring was improved by development of the analytical model of mass-and heat transfer during the SAGD production process. The developed model accounts for the liquid production rate defined at the horizontal producer and describes both the stage of steam chamber formation and the period of steam chamber spreading in the horizontal direction. The proposed model and the monitoring based on the results of distributed temperature measurements could be used for continuous SAGD production-regime optimization to systematically adjust operational parameters to maintain and optimize development of the steam chamber. It was shown that the suggested technique could increase SAGD efficieney and prevent steam breakthrough to the production well.
