Research and Application of Interwell Gas Tracer Technology

With the expansion of commercial tests of steam drive, immiscible drive, miscible drive and co2 drive in the west and east oilfields in China, gas tracers are required to monitor and evaluate the performance of well groups, learn the response relationship between injectors and producers and analyze the reasons behind the problems existing during production. In 2001, liquid tracer technology was basically matured in China, but gas tracer technology was still a gap to be filled. Gas tracers can be divided into chemical tracers and radioactive tracers and field tests conducted in foreign countries indicate that radioactive tracers have to be gradually abandoned due to environmental concerns. With the improvement of analytic precision of detecting instruments, chemical tracers have gradually become advantageous. At present, chemical gas tracers have gradually taken the place of radioactive gas tracers, becoming the dominant tracers being used and they have been more and more widely used in steam drive, immiscible drive and miscible drive in foreign countries. From 2002 to 2004, breakthroughs had been achieved in the research and application of interwell gas tracer technology by Drilling and Production Technology Research Institute of Liaohe Oil.field, PetroChina. The injecting equipment for gas tracers developed by the Institute is simple to operate with reliability. Environmental friendly tracers that are high temperature resistant are selected. The pretreatment equipment for gas tracer samples developed by the Institute can allow the concentrated samples being detected with the max. lower limit of 10<-15> V/K It has been proved that the gas tracer monitoring and interpretation method and related technologies are matured and feasible after being field tested in 15 well groups. Three patents have been applied in China, two of which have been authorized utility model patent, filling the gap in this field in China. The paper presents the selection of gas tracers, the determination of the dosage, injecting technology, sampling, analysis and interpretation method as well as cases of monitoring oil displacement performance in steam drive and immiscible drive field tests.
