Solvent Injection in Heavy Oil Fields in Brazil
This paper presents the experiences with the application of solvent injection in heavy oil fields in Brazil, mainly Rio Grande do Norte and Ceara Production Unit. The work evolves: reservoir characterization with main typical reservoir properties, solvent evaluation with the investigation of available and economic solvent formulation, viscosity reduction with different temperature and solvent concentration, crude oil-rock and solvent compatibility tests, field pilot test design with typical operational scheme (rate, well design etc), results with rate and recovery improvement, numerical simulation and analysis. Main heavy oil fields in Brazil are located in Rio Grande do Norte (Estreito and Alto do Rodrigues Fields), Ceara (Fazenda Belem Field), Alagoas (Carm6polis and Castanhal Fields) and Espirito Santo (Fazenda Alegre and Fazenda Sao Jorge Fields). Typical reservoirs are shallow sandstones with 25% porosity, 60% initial oil saturation, 15 degrees API and 1Om oil thickness. Total original oil in place reaches more than 1.8 billion barrels. The results suggest some increase in oil recovery with the use of solvent injection, however, within the range of variability of the usual cyclic steam method More pilot tests are necessary to account reservoir heterogeneities and to investigate different injection schemes. Solvent injection might be a good solution for distant and marginal heavy oil fields with scarce operational support and reservoirs with unfavorable conditions to cyclic steam.
