The PTRC: A World Leader in Enhanced Heavy Oil Recovery
Through strategic collaboration with organizations worldwide, the Petroleum Technology Research Centre (PTRC) fosters knowledge and progressive technologies to enhance the recovery of petroleum. PTRCs world leading achievements originate through the industry directed Core Research Program, which provides innovative, environmentally friendly solutions to extract more oil, with an emphasis on heavy oil production and global applicability. The Core Research Program is focused on four high priority areas-Heavy Oil (Post) Cold Flow;Miscible/Immiscible Solvent Injection;Enhanced Waterflooding;and Near-Wellbore Conformance Control. Projects within these categories are selected annually by a Technical Advisory Group comprised of industry partners. The separate major programs that the Core Research Program has spawned to demonstrate a specific promising technology include the Joint Implementation of Vapour Extraction (JIVE) Project and the IEA GHG Weyburn-Midale CO<,2> Monitoring and Storage Project. The JIVE Project will develop, demonstrate and evaluate solvent vapour extraction processes for EOR in heavy oil reservoirs. Three distinctly different heavy oil reservoirs have been selected for field case studies. The IEA GHG Weyburn-Midale C0<2> Monitoring and Storage Project, launched in 2000, studies CO<2> injection and storage in partially depleted oil reservoirs. This project is done in conjunction with two billion-dollar commercial C0<2> floods in Saskatchewan, Canada, where huge volumes of the gas are injected to revive oil production. The PTRC, a not-for-profit organization, was founded in 1998 by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), Saskatchewan Industry and Resources (SIR), Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) and the University of Regina (U of R). PTRCs primary research providers are the SRC and U of R.
