Preparing New and Emerging Markets for Bitumen Blends and Synthetic Crude Oil

This paper provides a brief overview of the Alberta oil sands industry, and how the market reach of future oil sands production will provide new feedstock alternatives to refineries in existing and emerging markets. Through a discussion of the quality differences unique to bitumen and synthetic crude oil quality, leading to the challenges the refining industry are faced with to be successful in processing these feedstocks. With both synthetic crude oil and bitumen blends expanding into new markets, in both North America and off shore, building awareness of the some of the unique and challenging issues based on the chemistry and quality of oil sands derived feedstocks will lead to a better understanding of what it takes to be sueeessful proeessing oil sands derived feedstocks.
