Mining in Albertas North-Getting an Oil Sands Project Out of the Ground
Although mining oil sands is a relatively simple process, the size, scale and timelines required to realize the benefits of development make it a complicated endeavor. Despite these challenges, several operating companies have made a commitment to expansion of the resource, realizing no opportunity presents itself without some measure of risk Synenco Energy Inc. was established in 1999 for the purpose of acquiring and developing oil sands located in the Athabasca region of northern Alberta. Synenco was confident of the economic viability of the Northern Lights Project and successfully secured both significant investment and a well established partner, Sinopec International Petroleum Corporation through its Canadian subsidiary, SinoCanada Petroleum Corporation. Through an assortment of studies and collaboration with regional stakeholders, the various risks of development including resource evaluation, regulatory requirements, technology, project execution and capital expenditure have been evaluated and carefully considered. This paper will discuss some of the major risks of oil sands development as described above along with the stress these mega- projects place on the labour market and infrastructure requirements. It will further discuss the importance of the focus and effort needed to execute such projects to successful completion- ultimately supplying the market with petroleum and other products.
