Transformation of Heavy Gas Oils Derived from Oil Sands to Petrochemical Feedstock

Albertas petrochemical industry is presently ethane- based. Increasing cost and diminishing supplies of ethane can impede future growth of Albertas petrochemical industry. In contrast rapidly growing oil sands production can provide abundant new feeds tocks and a number of government-industry studies have been carried out over the past years to evaluate effective integration of oil sands and petrochemical operations. Different integration schemes and technologies have been systematically evaluated. This paper describes research into the conversion of bitumen-derived heavy gas oil into petrochemical feedstock which has resulted in the development of two novel technologies and process integration schemes.
