Paraffinic Bitumen Froth Treatment:The Commercial Application of Innovations in Technology
The Athabasca Oil Sands Project (AOSP) is a joint venture of Shell Canada Limited, Chevron Canada Limited, and Western Oil Sands. It is the first folly integrated oil sands development ever brought on- stream. The mine, north of Fort McMurray, Alberta, consists of open-pit mining, extraction, and froth treatment facilities, while the upgrader is located at Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. The two are connected by dedicated pipelines carrying solvent-diluted bitumen and return solvent. The two facilities have been in foil operation since 2003 and are designed to produce and upgrade 155 kBPD of bitumen. Figure 1 depicts the various parts of the Muskeg River Mine (MRM) of the project.
