The Role of Alberta Oil Sands in Global Crude Oil Supply
In recent years the international investment community has devoted a lot of attention to the Albertas crude bitumen reserves, also known as oil sands. Alberta has one of the largest deposits of this extra heavy crude oil in the world. The established reserves of Alberta crude bitumen has been compared to the reserves of Saudi Arabia in size. Alberta has been the scene of mega investments in its oil sands industry in the past decade. Crude bitumen production in Alberta has more than doubled in this time period and is expected to reach 2.8 million barresl a day from its 2005 level of some 1 million barrels in the next 10 years. A detailed analysis of potential production from this vast resource, including reserves, markets and supply cost of crude bitumen production will be presented in this paper.
