The Field Development of the Extra Heavy Oil Orinoco Belt in Morichal: A Joint Chinese-Venezuelan Effort
Appropriate planning and a systematic approach in conjunction with a continual evaluation are foundational to the development of an extra heavy oil field. To ensure operational success and to avoid economic waste, an experienced multidisciplinary team should have ongoing responsibility for identifying and develop the procedures and management systems required for commissioning, start-up, operations and maintenance of extra heavy oil upstream facilities. This paper describes the approach used for the development of the Morichal Field Block MPE-3 from mechanical completion up to the start of operations. A significant amount of time was spent on the planning and budgeting of the pre-operations activities which contributes to a good development of commissioning and startup phases. The approach model will serve as a pre-operations management and planning tool to execute future operating projects in the field. The technology presented in this paper is applicable to the management of other extra heavy oil reservoirs which exhibit similar process conditions as artificial lift, dilution with naphtha, dehydration and desalting.
