Offshore Heavy Crude Oil Exploitation in Mexico Phase 1: East Campeche Project

During the years 2004 and 2005 a number of offshore oilfields were discovered (ranging from 8-12 °API, that is extra heavy oil) in the PEMEX Exploration and Production, PEP Offshore Northeast area: the successful drilling of the Numan, Baksha, Pohp, Nab, Kayab, Tson, Pit, Yaxiltun, Kanche and Lem exploratory wells allowed the achieving the incorporation of important oil in place volumes around 10 billion barrels of oil. Due to the quality of the oil and the complexity in the exploitation of these reservoirs, a development strategy was designed in several phases, with the purpose of ensuring the feasibility and profitability through the Project of Exploitation named Campeche Oriente: the first one of them considering the exploitation in just two discovered fields: Tson and Pohp, incorporating the rest of the fields in the second phase. The proposal for development of the phase I in the Campeche Oriente project was done by a multidisciplinary team, implementing methodologies recently applied in PEMEX E & P organization. The team was integrated by personnel of different disciplines and worked together during a period of 20 weeks with the purpose of achieving a project concrete and sustained in the short time, obtaining excellent benefits and results immediately for the appraisal of these fields, as well as identify and generate value in the exploitation phase. The fields Tson and Pohp are in a water depth of about 328 ft, and they were selected for being to a distance relatively close by to current and new facilities of the fields in exploitation Ku, Maloob and Zaap, for theirs volumes, due to the fact that the hydrocarbon presents better characteristics in comparison with other extra heavy oilfields recently discovered. For the exploitation of Tson and Pohp fields and according to the Front End Loading, FEL methodology, the economic technical feasibility of diverse scenarios was analyzed from which the best alternative was selected. That alternative includes: improvement the conditions for crude oil transport, the application of new proven technologies (multiphase pump, production sub sea systems, and remote control in the operation of process platforms). It was considered to be the conceptual design of the superficial infrastructure needed for the secondary recovery methods. From analyzed options, the most profitable considers the exploitation with conventional, horizontals and extended reach wells drilled a fixed platform; reservoir pressure maintenance by nitrogen injection; the use of multiphase pumping, three phase separator; crude oil blended with condensated to assure flow of fluids and to improve the quality crude to 21 °API; as well as use of the FPSO in the Ku Maloob Zaap Asset. During the phase of field delineation, technological tests will be done for the improvement of flow inside the well and increase of API oil density blending condensated. The analyzed options present different grades of technical complexity, risk and uncertainty; profitability issue was considered as decisive criteria that allowed to identify the most attractive option. Economic indicators are result of a robust economic evaluation, which includes stochastic oil production forecasts from an uncertainty evaluation of reservoir parameters; risk analysis for economic variables (oil price, project start, investments, P10, P50 and P90 percentiles production forecast, etc). Execution of the project is considered a major issue, due to the opportunity that represents extra-heavy oil offshore exploitation in Mexico, which is planned to carry out with this this project which considers expected production volumes of huge importance. In this paper, it is presented stochastic production forecast, associated risk to execution, as well as economic indicators of proposed project and implications. Likewise it is considered to compile the most information as possible and to carry out studies to decrease uncertainty for development of recent discovered fields.
