The Technical Challenges for Offshore Heavy Oil Production in Bohai Bay

Most of the reserves in Bohai Bay are classified as heavy oil with great variations in crude viscosity. For the reservoir with conventional viscous oil water flooding is the main recovery process with a recovery ranging from 18% to 20%. Polymer flooding has been tested to improve oil recovery and shows positive results. There are challenges in applying polymer under harsh water conditions large well spacing and the limited scale of the application on the platforms. For medium heavy oil reservoirs, various techno logies have been used or considered, including down-hole electric heating, chemical stimulation, horizontal well with lateral branches. The advantages and disadvantages in technical safety, and environmental issues for offshore applications are presented. These technologies mostly deal with problems in the well or near the wellbore. However, the greatest challenge is the recovery of the crude from deep reservoir. In this case, thermal recovery and gas injection techniques show great benefit, but with high risk.
