Use of cashmere debarring technology for coarse alpaca fibers

Coarse alpaca fibers have been extensively used in quilts and pillows. Strong and stiff fibers can cause discomfort to the end users because these fibers often poke through quilts and pillow covers. A potential solution to this problem is to use a cashmere dehairing facility to remove some of the coarse alpaca fibers and then use the dehaired fibers for the intended end uses. Alpaca dehairing is new and little is known about this practice. This paper reports trial results on alpaca dehairing using a simple cashmere dehairing machine. The diameter of alpaca fleece, dehaired alpaca fibers and removed alpaca fibers were measured with an Optical-based fiber Diameter Analyser (OFDA). The results indicate that it is possible to dehair coarse alpaca fibers using a cashmere dehairing facility, and the dehaired alpaca fibers are cleaner, bulkier and softer, with a relatively small reduction in average fiber diameter. This technology has the potential to improve the quality of products made from these fibers.
