Objective evaluation of fabric smoothness grade based on a grating projection and binocular CCD

The tendency of fabric to wrinkle after home laundering is very important to the textile industry as it impacts the visual appeal of apparels. General method of grading fabric smoothness is subjective mainly according to the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC) Test Method (TM) 124. In this paper, a system for objective evaluation of fabric smoothness grade based on a grating projection and binocular CCD was built. Two images captured by different CCD compensated each other and reduced the influence of noises. The application of the four-step phase-shift method enabled the calculation of exact phase in a point easy and quick, and a large amount of 3D points were obtained precisely. To characterize fabric smoothness appearance, three geometrical parameters were calculated. Finally, a feed-forward neural network was trained to perform the smoothness grading. The experimental grades provided by this grating projection system were highly consistent with the subjective results.
