Adaptive-PID Cascade Controller Design for DC/DC Buck-Boost PWM Power Converters

In order to improve the control performance of DC/DC buck-boost PWM converters, the control problem of the output voltage can be transformed to the inductor current control. Thus, a cascade control system is constituted when a cascade controller is adopted. The outer loop of the cascade system adopts an adaptive control algorithm with a parameter estimator and the capacitor voltage is treated as the controlled variable. The inner one adopts a special PID control algorithm and the inductor current is treated as the controlled variable. These two cascaded controllers not only can make the controlled system achieve excellent dynamic characteristics, but also have strong robustness to the variations of the system parameters, such as load resistance, capacitance, inductance, and input voltage. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the cascade controller.
