Adaptive Cross-Layer Routing for HWN with Dedicated Relay Station

The ultimate goals for heterogeneous hybrid wireless networks are to provide different users with high-data rates, mixed traffic and QoS support. There are two types of wireless networks within the personal communication context. One is a cellular based network and the other is the emerging ad-hoc wireless network. A cellular network has reliable communication performance, with mobiles being connected through base stations while in a low-cost, plug-and-play ad-hoc network, wireless nodes communicate with one another directly without infrastructure support. In this study, we have investigated both resource management and routing strategies for hybrid wireless network with dedicated relay stations. An introduction and theoretical analysis on hybrid wireless network’s capacity, access method and routing constraints are presented first. A cross layer scheme called Adaptive Hybrid Routing with Relay Station and detailed hybrid traffic delivery models are then presented. Simulation results indicate that the traffic over this novel hybrid wireless network is managed more efficiently when using the proposed algorithm.
