Performance Improvement for Best-effort Traffic of IEEE 802.11e QoS MAC in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks
Wireless mobile networks and devices are broadly spread out as they provide users convenient access to information. Particularly, the mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) that make no use of wired infrastructure is receiving growing interests with the underlying widely deployed 802.11 wireless LAN. With the expanding scope of applications of MANETs, the need for the provision of QoS capability for real time traffic becomes essential. In this paper, we propose a queue scheduling scheme of EDCA channel access mechanism defined in the 802.11e MAC, aiming at enhancing the performance of the best effort traffic without deteriorating the performance of the higher priority traffics such as voice and video traffic. For this purpose we also make a provision of appropriate mapping of the QoS related parameters defined at each protocol layer. The proposed scheme is validated via simulation, showing noticeable performance improvement in best effort traffics.
