Cementite and the effect of alloying elements on its formation in steels
Cementite is one of the most important phases in steels. It can significantly strengthen the ferrite phase, but on the other hand it is also frequently responsible for crack initiation resulting in reduced toughness and ductility. Its actual effect on mechanical properties of steels is dependent strongly on its volume fraction, morphology and distribution. The history of steel development so far is largely a course of developing methods for controlling the formation and the characteristics of cementite phase.
