Preparation and Characterization of CNTs/ABS Composites

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) including single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were synthesized by the catalytic chemical vapor decomposition method. They were purified by hydrofluoric acid treatment and composited with acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) by a casting model method. The morphologies and microstructure of CNTs and the surface of CNTs/ABS composite films, the dispersion states of CNTs in ABS polymer matrix and the interracial interaction were studied by using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The results show that carbon nanotubes are uniformly dispersed in the ABS matrix at nanometer scale, and act as reinforcing materials due to the microcracks and uneven rough surfaces appeared in the fracture section. The role of carbon nanotubes bridging-across the holes and cracks in the polymer matrix is also suggested.
