Properties of Protein Adsorption on Carbonate-modified Hydroxyapatite
Carbonate-containing hydroxyapatites (HapS) were prepared at pH=7.0, 8.5, or 10.5 under CO<,2>-gas bubbling, or without it. Under CO<,2>-gas bubbling, calcium carbonate was predominantly produced at 8.5 and 10.5 of pH. On the other hand, only the XRD pattern of HAp was found in all the samples prepared without CO<,2> gas, and contained 1.74-4.40wt% of carbonate. The amount of the carbonate increased as the increase in pH and IR spectra showed an OH- substituted carbonate species as well as PO<,4>- subsituted one with the increase of the amount. The adsorption properties of bovine serum albumin (BSA) were investigated at 295K on the samples of different contents of carbonate. All the adsorption isotherms followed the Langmuir-type adsorption indicating the monolayer adsorption. The saturated amounts of BSA decreased with the increase in the amount of carbonate in apatite, and this result was ascribed to the increase in the OH-substituted carbonate species, which located OH defect of the surface HAp, being an adsorption site of BSA.
