Water Movement in Fresh Lightweight Concrete

In this study, we concentrate on the movement of water between the lightweight coarse aggregate (LCA) and the mortar in flesh lightweight concrete. We carried out slump tests to measure the slump loss in flesh lightweight concrete and conducted water-cement ratio tests to investigate the water-cement ratio of the mortar portion, from which the LCA was removed. The lightweight concrete had water-cement ratios of 30%, 40%, and 50%, while the LCA had water contents of 0%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 30%. The results of the slump test showed that the concrete that contained the LCA with the water content of 0% had much higher slump loss than the concretes that used LCAs with water contents of 10%, 15%, 20%, and 30%. Subsequent water-cement ratio tests on fresh lightweight concrete showed that the difference in the water-cement ratios for the measured values and the mix proportions changed from -5 to +2 points because of water movement between the LCA and the mortar. Furthermore, this kind of water movement depended on the water content of the LCA.
