Achievements in the Research and Development of Silver-based Alloys for Electrical Contact Materials

Silver based contact materials have been used for over 70 years in low to medium voltage switching applications for a broad range of applications. With the electrical requirements becoming more complex, followed by miniaturization, and then environmental and health concerns, many once popular material had to be replaced with other ones. In addition, the price fluctuations of silver have given reason for further development efforts from time to time in the history. In the past 20 years, the main focus on material development has been in the area of Cadmium replacement-and most recently as part of the European RoHS requirements-and to evaluate better performing materials which allow to reduce the silver content of a given switching device in order to respond to ever increasing commodity prices. This paper concentrates on electrical contact applications and does not address in any detail its use as solder or brazing alloys for electrical assembly or other related applications in the electrical or other industrial uses. The following is an overview of past and more recent R & D efforts on a global basis and for the different key application areas.
