2ND MEGA-CITIES INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE 2006, GUANGZHOU, CHINA THE EVOLUTION OF A COMPACT CITY AND ITS IMPLICATIONS ON SUSTAINABILITY
Hong Kong has undergone dramatic transformation into a compact city during the past one and a half century. The high-density and high-rise developments were dictated more by circumstances than by design, the major factors being the rapid growth of population, modem construction technology, relaxation of development intensity, the borrowed place, borrowed time mentality and the domination of the market place. The high concentrations of population have enhanced the efficiency in the provision of basic infrastructure particularly that of public transport. More land can be reserved for conservation and meeting the needs of future generations. Nevertheless, high-density developments and podium developments have posed a number of challenges to sustainability such as visual quality of the built environment and air ventilation problems.
