LARGE-SCALE URBAN AND LANDSAPE DESIGN AS THE CATALYST OF ECO-CITY DEVELOPMENT

The paper introduces new ecological design approaches for exploring the potential modes of design and development of the large-scale urban landscape. Through the comparison of cases and experiences in the recent international design competitions on the sport park, I have come up with three possible approaches to ecological design: landscape as picture, landscape as flow and landscape as process. Based on the design criticism of three case studies in the Toronto Downsview Park design competition, the London 2012 Olympic Park and the Kaohsiung 2009 World Games Park, we explore how the three ecological approaches are integrated and applied into design process. The meanings, potential impact and effect of the three modes of design and development were analyzed. The case studies show that the contemporary urban sport park is not merely a traditional urban park, providing the recreational and sport functions to individual citizens, but it is also a public space for collective social events and sport competitions. The ecological function of the contemporary urban sport park has to go beyond a green spot surrounded by the intensive built environment. It is a strategic point in the landscape ecological network of the region, which will influence the vegetation dynamics, bio-diversity and hydrological processes. The design of urban sport park should be treated as a strategic planning and the design of mechanism and process, rather than as a static landscape form. The urban landscape of the sport park contains the time dimension and is to be transformed over time. The large-scale urban transformation, including the reconstruction of city fabric and the reconnections of networks in natural system is to be conducted through micro-scale actions and incremental processes.
