SHANGHAI IN THE CHINESE CENTURY MAPPING THE EMERGENCE OF THE NEW ASIAN METROPOLIS
Shanghai, with a population of 20 million, is a mega- city, with a built environment that is the result of a unique mix of colonial history and Chinese urban planning. After the formation of the Special Economic Zone in Pudong in 1990, a huge wave of domestic and foreign investment, particularly in infrastructure, has led to rapid and aggressive transformation of the city as it attempts to regain its once pre-eminent position in Asia. But what toll is all of this taking on the city, its environment, and, most importantly, the people who call it home?
