ECOLOGICAL RESIDENTIAL LANDSCAPING IN A COMPACT URBAN FORM-CASE STUDY IN URBAN HONG KONG

Hong Kong presents a compact urban form which character with high dense and high rise development. However, it meanwhile boasts of a variable biodiversity and abundant natural recourses. Under this specific circumstance, every piece of urban space has to be purposely designed in order to meet the high demands. High dense and high-rise developments within limit land resources must not only preserve the natural landscape but also provide greenery for the residents. Development plans need to be responsive with greater sensitivity to the balance between hard-surfaced builtup area and green area. In order to have a better understanding of the residential landscape design under this compact urban form, two housing projects are selected to do the case analysis in this research. One is from Home Ownership Scheme (Ko Chun Court) and the other is a public housing project (Yiu Tung Estate). They all locate in a high value landscape region and present a close relationship with the natural mountain. This study will focus on the residential landscape framework will be used to evaluate the taken in this research. Through the comparison of the two cases, it was found that vertical design should be promoted in the future housing project in Hong Kong. At the same time, the housing projects which adjacent to the natural mountain can be viewed as a bridge to connect the natural environment to the urban area. Another important aspect is that, creating a high biodiversity in the housing project may not only contribute to preserve the natural environment but also help to form a healthy living environment for the residents. The results of this research will help the designers to have a better understanding of the special geographic form of Hong Kong and the specific ecological residential landscape design according to the compact urban form.
