MEGA SITES MEGA PROJECTS VS. MY PLACE MY CITY

In Asia, cities such as Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul and others remain the best hope of many who seek a better life. People continue to flock to the cities, and cities continue to grow at record pace. In order to keep up with the demand, new mega size projects continue to spawn up. Most Asian developments tend to fall into two categories:- Mega Site Developments-gigantic sites and many similar small footprint high-rise buildings; Mega Projects-gigantic buildings in a dense downtown site. These developments attempt to create or to change a city in a blink of the eye, instead of letting them develop over time. Both of these types of projects pose tremendous challenges to the architects and the urban designers. The intent of this paper is to analyze these two types of development and propose remedies to the mega cities. The concept of place making, the importance of maintaining a continuous urban fabric and the use of other time-honored urban design techniques are still the foundation of making a successful urban environment, regardless of scale, size and pace of development. All too often, the focus has been placed on the tangibles-the shape, the look, the size, the materials, and the amount of sunlight and the technical advancement of the buildings. But the key to the success of the traditional cities goes beyond the quantifiable. It lies in the intangibles-the sense of place, the quality of space, the association that it evokes, the memory that it brings, the emotions that it heightens. It is a matter of quality rather than quantity.
