AFTER THE MEGACITY-STRATEGIES FOR KNOWLEDGE-BASED URBAN DEVELOPMENT

In a networking global society, the notion of economical, cultural, and metropolitan centres is radically changing. Less than physical centres, the networking society relies on flows, transmissions, and connections. In networks, everywhere is centre and periphery at the same time. On this background, the role of urban agglomerations (e.g. Megacities) must be critically re-defined as regards their social, cultural and economical function: what can Megacenters contribute in a networking-culture without primary need for centres anymore? The paper shares results and experiences from research projects carried out during the past 3 years in different Asian cities and regions. Based on field-work mostly in China, Vietnam, and Japan, cultural development and urban-architectural management under the conditions of accelerated economical growth were examined. From this perspective, the paper derives arguments for integrated strategies on the background of knowledge as a resource for development. As a major result of this investigation, soft factors as knowledge production or culture work are to be balanced with the hard facts of urbanistic and architectural intervention (industrialisation, metropolisation, densification). Sustaining this balance, strategies for development are suggested that incorporate knowledge work, industrial production, and cultural development likewise.
