IMPORTATION AND ADAPTATION OF ARCHITECTURAL AND URBAN DESIGN--A CCASE STUDY OF VETTORIO GREGOTTIS PLAN OF PUJIANG TOWN IN SHANGHAI
In the past quarter of century, China saw large amount influx of importing foreign architecture. What methodologies did the foreign architects adopt for their designs in the remote China? How can an idea be turned into real buildings? This article tries to find the answers through the case study of Vettorio Gregottis design of Pujiang Town and some other new towns in Shanghai, China. The article shows different methodologies adopted by various foreign architects, and how the ideal concepts be turned to real buildings. The authors suggest that more practical and local life should be studied before imposing any spectacular plan by the overseas architects, instead of imitating the indigenous building vocabularies visually and superficially.
