BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO VERTEBRATE FOSSILS FROM THE HEYUAN BASIN, GUANGDONG PROVINCE

Since 1996, 693 nests, which consist of 12, 386 dinosaur eggs, have been found in the Heyuan Basin. The eggs from 687 nests are rounded, and six nests of them are elongated in shape. These fossils are distributed in the east, south and north of the urban of Heyuan City and along both banks of the East River, with an area of 100 square kilometers. Heyuan Basin has become another important locality in Guangdong Province besides Nanxiong Basin for studying dinosaur eggs and the relevant subjects. In 1999, Heyuannia huangi, a member of the family Oviraptoridae, was found in the Heyuan Basin, which made Heyuan become another locality in China besides Inner Mongolia, where oviraptorid dinosaurs were found. At the same time, the long-shaped eggs, which coexist with Heyuannia huangi were proved to be laid by Heyuannia. In 2001, four groups consisted of 168 dinosaur footprints were found. The discoveries of these dinosaur skeletons, eggs and footprints provide important information for the study of dinosaur behaviour, paleogeography and paleoclimate. All of these fossils are dated as the Late Cretaceous.
