DINOSAUR ASSEMBLAGES FROM THAILAND: A COMPARISON WITH CHINESE FAUNAS

The dinosaur record from Thailand, which extends from the Late Triassic to the late Early Cretaceous, is compared with the Chinese record. Some Thai dinosaur assemblages can be correlated easily enough with Chinese faunas: the assemblage from the Phu Kradung Formation is similar to those from the Late Jurassic Upper Shaximiao Formation of Sichuan and Shishugou Formation of Xinjiang; the Aptian assemblage from the Khok Kruat Formation shows similarities with the dinosaur faunas from the Xinminbao Group of Gansu and the Dashuigou Formation of Inner Mongolia, which both correspond to the later part of the Early Cretaceous. For other dinosaur faunas from Thailand, it is difficult to find an exact Chinese counterpart. The Late Triassic sauropodomorphs from the Nam Phong Formation do not seem to have equivalents in China. The Early Cretaceous assemblage from the Sao Khua Formation, which curiously lacks ornithischians, differs in many respects from the dinosaur assemblage of the Jehol Biota of northeastern China, but may resemble the poorly known fauna from the Napai Formation of Guangxi. More detailed comparisons between Thai and Chinese dinosaurs may lead to a better understanding of faunal distribution and possible episodes of isolation and dispersal during the Mesozoic in Asia.
