A REVIEW OF THE CRETACEOUS-PALEOGENE BOUNDARY IN THE NANXIONG BASIN
The Cretaceous-Paleogene Boundary (KPB) in the Nanxiong Basin is dissimilar to the boundary recognized in other areas of the world: it lacks an iridium-rich clay bed; dinosaurs were reported to have survived the KPB; and the sediments are entirely redbeds. Moreover, the Nanxiong Basin KPB has been placed in several stratigraphic positions since 1963. Most recently the boundary has been placed either at the last appearance of dinosaur eggshell or within a 20m thick section located 80m stratigraphically below the last occurrence of dinosaur eggshells. In addition to a change in the stratigraphic position of the last occurrence of dinosaur eggshell and an apparent measurement change within the primary measured section that spans the KPB, various workers, using palynology, invertebrate biostratigraphy, or charophyte biostratigraphy, have placed the boundary elsewhere in the Nanxiong Basin geological column. We conclude that the KPB is best recognized at the contact between the Pingling Formation and the overlying Shanghu Formation.
