DINOSAURS FROM JAPAN
Dinosaur fossils of Japan are reviewed and conservative interpretations are made in this study. Since the first discovery of a Japanese dinosaur in 1978, the number of dinosaur discoveries in Japan has been increased rapidly. No dinosaur body fossils have been found that are older than the Cretaceous. Most Japanese dinosaur fossils are fragmentary but some are well studied. The Lower Cretaceous sediments of Japan have yielded a titanosauriform sauropod, five groups of non-avian theropods (carnosaur, spinosaurid, tyrannosaurid, dromaeosaurid, and a possible oviraptorosaur) and two ornithopods (basal iguanodontian and non-hadrosaurid iguanodontoid). The Upper Cretaceous deposits have produced five non- avian theropods (carnosaur, tyrannosaurid, ornithomimosaur, therizinosaurid, and dromaeosaurid) and two ornithischians (hadrosaurid and ankylosaur). These are the minimum number of dinosaur taxa from Japan, and further studies may add more taxa.
