Exploitation of Combining Ability for Heterosis in Maize (Zea mays L.)
Combining ability and heterosis studies were analyzed out using 45 single crosses derived from 15×3 line×tester mating for grain yield, days to silking, plant height, cob height, number of leaves per plant, days to brown husk, number of grains per row and 100-grain weight. Statistical analysis revealed that both additive and non-additive gene effects were important for all the characters. The inbred lines L3, L5, L7, L10 and L 15 were found to be good general combiners for grain yield. On the basis of heterosis and sca effects, four hybrids L5×T1, L 7×T1, L10×T1 and L15×T3 were found to be superior for yield and yield contributing characters.
