Evaluation of Maize-wheat Cropping System under Double-no-till Practice in Indo-Gangetic Plains of India
Performance of maize-wheat cropping system under resource conserving technologies viz., double no-till (flat) and permanent beds (FIRB) over conventional tillage has been evaluated in terms of economic yield, water productivity and profitability during 2004~2005 at Project Directorate for Cropping Systems Research (PDCSR), Modipuram (29°4′ N latitude, 77°46′ E longitude and at an elevation of 237m above mean sea level), India in collaboration with CIMMYT-India/RWC. Results indicated a notable increase in economic yield of maize being 19.2 and 28.9% with furrow irrigated raised bed (FIRB) planting (5.66/ha) compared to flat no-till (4.75t/ha) and conventional till (4.39t/ha) planting systems, respectively. Productivity of wheat was higher by 7.3% and 8.6%, respectively under flat no- till (5.56t/ha) compared to FIRB (5.18t/ha) and conventional till flat planting (5.12t/ha). Water productivity (kg grainm-3 water) of both maize and wheat was remarkably higher in FIRB planting (2.79 and 1.98) followed by flat no-till (1.74 and 1.89) and the lowest (1.36 and 1.38) in conventional till system. However, the magnitude of increase in water productivity due to FIRB/fiat no-till systems compared to conventional till planting was higher in maize than the wheat. Economic analysis revealed that net profit ( US /ha) was more in flat no-till (340 and 463) followed by FIRB (332 and 441 ) and least in conventional-till (144 and 337), respectively for maize and wheat. The minor differences were due to initial costs in forming of raised beds, which will disappear when beds are retained permanently.
