Marker Assisted Selection Efforts for Quality Protein Maize (QPM)

In the present study, the SSR primer phi057 proved to be an effective tool in QPM breeding efforts, and was used in identifying o2 genotypes in the improved QPM populations and the advanced lines developed from the QPM populations. Remarkable genetic drift in the o2 locus was found in the improved populations and during the development of inbred lines from the QPM populations. The marker was also used sucessfully in marker assisted selection efforts in converting the normal elite inbred lines into QPM lines in a backcross breeding program. In addition, the AFLP technique was shown to be powerful for background selection in the backcross program. A promising strategy to combine SSR in primary selection and AFLP in genetic background selection was successfully used in QPM breeding.
