The Influence of Education on Income Inequality: Empirical Evidence from Different Regions of China
This paper presents empirical evidence on how education is related to income distribution in a panel data set covering 10 provinces for the period from 1995 to 2002. The findings indicate that the educational factors-higher educational attainment and more unequal distribution of education-play a significant role in making income distribution more inequality. The internal equalization in education has not changed this trend. The result also confirms that economic growth aggravates income inequality and there is the Kuznets invert-U curve for the relationship between income level and income inequality, but not for the relationship between educational attainment and income level in China. Analysis to the eastern, middle and western regions of china indicates that the influence of education decreases sequentially in the eastern, middle and western regions of our country, but the influence of the public investment on education increases sequentially. The result also shows that the influence of the economic growth is not remarkable in three major regions.
