Chinas Strategy for Combating Desertification

Desertification is one of the most serious ecological and environmental problems in China, affecting a total land area of 2.674 million km2. Effective and timely control of desertification is crucial for the development of Chinas national economy. The paper highlights Chinas ongoing activities and achievements in desertification combating, describes the present status and analyzes the root causes of desertification, and discusses opportunities for promoting desertification combating. It is clearly stated in the paper that desertification-combating programmes should serve the objective of sustainable development, follow the guidelines of taking protection as the priority, actively promoting the rehabilitation of ground vegetation, and rationally utilizing the local resources where feasible. The goals of combating desertification are also presented, which include: by 2050, desertification- affected land shall be put under basic control, a stable ecological protection system, an efficient desert industry system, a comprehensive ecological environment protection system and a supporting system for resource development and utilization shall be put in place for the purpose of realizing a harmony for economic, social and environment development in the desertified areas. In addition, this paper summarizes the strategic objectives and the overall arrangements of Chinas Desertification Combating Programme, and emphasizes the importance of effective technical, managerial and financial measures for assuring the smooth implementation of the programme.
