Dust Events and Physiochemical Characteristics of the Aeolian Dust in Xinjiang, China

As a main source region of the Asian Dust, Xinjiang has a highest frequency of dust events in China. Based on the data from 50 meteorological stations and dust aerosol sampling data in Aksu and Cele, the Characteristics of dust events and the dust aerosol are analyzed. The results are: (1) there is a decrease tendency for dust event from 1961 to 2000 and from desert areas to mountainous areas in Xinjiang. The peak of dust events occurs in April or May; (2) dust occurrence has some dependence on strong wind, precipitation and air temperature; (3) during dust storm days, the concentration of atmospheric aerosol is much higher than that of non- dust storm days. The maximum value of concentration at Aksu and Cele ranges from 4.7 to 7.0μtm. During dust storm days, the percentage of fine particles in the atmosphere at Cele Station decreases, but it increased at Aksu station, due to the different underlaying surface; (4) during dust storm days, there is a consistent distribution in different particle sizes range. The peak values range from 4.7 to 7.0μm. During non-dust storm days, the peak values vary in the range of 3.3 to 4.7μm. The proportion of coarse size particles increases evidently.
